Why Don't Students Have Access to the YouTube iOS App?
In early 2016, Google made several changes related to YouTube for Educators and the YouTube Safety Mode. These were two services our filter company (Securly) used to provide a restricted and safe YouTube experience. These changes forced our filter provider to re-evaluate their approach to YouTube and make some adjustments.
As a result the experience students would have in the YouTube App on our school iPads does not have the restricted features in place. This means objectionable content can be found and viewed. This also means students can view and make comments on videos and commenting is allowed.
These changes make the YouTube App not a good choice for PALCS. This is why we decided not to permit it to be installed on student iPads.
Students can engage with YouTube from the Safari browser. This experience has the intended restrictions in place which means that available videos are filtered, searching is filtered, and commenting is disabled.
