School-issued Windows computers are configured and managed to provide students with the tools they need for learning while maintaining the security, reliability, and consistency of the device.
What Students Can Do
Students can use the following features without assistance from IT:
- USB ports for supported peripherals and storage devices
- Wi-Fi to connect to available wireless networks
- Webcam and microphone for video conferencing, recording, and other supported applications
- Display settings, including screen resolution and other available personalization options
- Use applications and software provided by the school
What Is Managed or Restricted
For security and device-management purposes, students do not have administrative rights on school-issued Windows computers.
As a result, students cannot:
- Install software that requires administrator privileges
- Manually install certain Windows or system updates
- Boot the computer from an external USB drive or other external media
- Disable or bypass school security and management settings
- Change settings that are controlled by IT
- Bypass web filtering or browser restrictions
Installing Software
Need an application that isn't already installed?
Students can install approved applications through the Company Portal OR through the Software Catalog on older devices. The tools contain software and utilities that have been reviewed and made available for student devices.
If an application is needed for a class but is not available in the Software Catalog, contact the Help Desk for assistance.
Windows and Software Updates
Windows devices are centrally managed by IT. Operating system, security, and supported application updates may be automatically distributed to devices.
Students generally do not need administrative access to keep their computers up to date. When an update requires a restart, students should save their work and restart the computer when prompted. Computer Updates

- Protect student and school data
- Reduce malware and other security risks
- Keep devices reliable and supported
- Maintain required web filtering and security protections
- Ensure applications and updates are compatible with school systems
