If the sound from either your computer’s speakers or your headset’s speakers is not working, the first thing you should check is the computer's "Mute" button. On most of our Student computers there is a key that mutes/unmutes the computer. When the computer is muted, a small LED will light up on a key like this:
If the mute is enabled, it will also change the icon at the bottom right of your computer.
If you press the button, it should unmute the laptop and turn the LED indicator off. (If the light does not turn off, you may need to press and hold the "fn" key at the bottom left of the keyboard and then press the button. To learn more about the function keys please visit this article.) You can also unmute the computer by left clicking on the icon and clicking the "Unmute Volume" button at the left of the volume slider.
If the computer is not muted, it may be turned very low. You can either use the physical buttons on laptop keyboard or the volume slider to raise the volume of the computer.
If the mute button is not enabled and the sound is up, you may have to enable the sound manually. You can make sure the speaker is enabled by right clicking the sound icon at the bottom right of your computer and selecting "Sound settings."
Scroll down to "All Sound devices."
Click on "Speakers" (note how it currently says "disabled").
Then click on "Allow."
That should restore the sound to your speakers if it has gotten disabled. If you are still having trouble getting your sound/speakers to work, you may want to try updating your computer's drivers. You can easily do this by following our guide (Updating drivers on HP Computers)
