Installing Studio Screen Capture/Screencast-O-Matic

To use the Screen Recording software that is built into Canvas/Studio, you will need to click on the Studio tab while you are inside of Canvas. At the top right there will be a “Record” button and when you left click that you will want to select “Screen Capture.”

If you have never used this application before, it will prompt you to download the software required. You will just want to press the blue “Download” button at the bottom right of your screen.

This will start a download for a file. Once that is fully downloaded, just double click on the file on the bottom left of the screen (you can also find this in your “Downloads” folder on your computer).

This will start the installer and eventually will inform you that it is completed.

Now refresh the Studio video page and try to launch the Screen Capture again, this time it will prompt you to “Open Screen Recorder Launcher v2.0” and you will want to check the “Always open these types of links in the associated app.”

It is very likely that you will get an error message that says “Failed to download latest version!” Don’t worry, all you will have to do in this case is restart your computer and launch the program again.

Once you have restarted your computer and you open the Screen Capture application again, it will download the update properly and should bring up an interface that will let you record your screen.

Try recording a test recording by pressing the Red “Rec” button. (You can also change the size of the screen recording by clicking the White arrows at the corner and sides of the dotted line.) When you are finished the recording, press the blue Pause button and then press “Done.” This will bring you to a page where you can upload the video you just took.

Name it and put in a short description and then press “Upload.” You may get a similar error as you got before “Failed to Encode! Try disabling anti-virus software to see if it’s interfering” but again, all you will need to do is restart the computer and the Screen Capturing software should work from then on. (You may need to restart/attempt this 1-3 times for it to work.)

After you press upload it will show up in your Studio video player/manager. From there you can share it with people by click on the three dots at the top right of the video and click “Share Media”.

From there you can either create a direct link to give out…

Or share it directly with someone via Canvas or email.
